TOP ARTISTS TO BE CELEBRATED AT THE 2012 MARTY AWARDS!

MISSISSAUGA, ON- The Mississauga Arts Council (MAC) is ready to roll out the red carpet for the city’s top artists at the 2012 MARTY Awards. MAC is set to dazzle the arts community with an unforgettable evening of glamour at the popular event. The MARTYS will take place on Thursday, May 31, 2012 at the Living Arts Centre, located at 4141 Living Arts Drive in Mississauga. The event will begin at 6:00 p.m. with networking on the red carpet, followed by the awards ceremony starting at 8 p.m. Produced by the Mississauga Arts Council, the MARTY Awards honour artists in the categories of literary, performing, media and visual arts, as well as creative community. Winners will receive a cash prize, extensive media coverage and recognition at the event.

Now into its 18th year, the MARTY Awards celebrate the artistic achievements of the city’s established artists while encouraging and supporting emerging artistic talent. The awards are the epicentre of hype and publicity for Mississauga’s thriving arts community. This year there are a grand total of 90 artists in the running for the awards including the JUNO nominated Johnny Max Band, singers Suzie McNeil and Carlo Coppola, TV actor A.J. Saudin (Degrassi the Next Generation), Grammy award-winning songstress Liberty Silver, star dancer Amanda Cleghorn (So You Think You Can Dance Canada) and many more!

The MARTYS will be hosted by local author and television personality Kathy Buckworth. She will be joined on stage by the Davor Jordanovski Band, the Mississauga Festival Chamber Choir and the Axé Capoeira dancers. The Damon Pfaff Band will entertain guests in the atrium.

In celebration of MAC’s 30th Anniversary, there will be a retrospective showcase in the atrium on all of the past MARTYS winners from its inception in 1994 until the present. Past MARTYS winners will be honoured at this event and available for interviews as well.

There will also be two awards given out to individuals who have made a significant contribution to the arts in Mississauga; the Laurie Pallett Patron of the Arts Award and MAC’s Hazel McCallion Volunteer of the Year Award. The winners of these special awards will receive an original award.

Lastly, the People’s Choice Award will also be presented at the event. The general public was invited to choose its favourite MARTYS nominated artist by voting on MAC’s website. The council is thrilled to boast it received over 6,000 votes!
