At the Eleventh Session of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Peoples in New York, UN Women organized a side event on “Good Practices: Indigenous Women´s Contributions to Citizenship and Governance Processes”.

The panel focused on the results of public policies in Mexico which have tried to integrate a gender and intercultural approach to advance indigenous communities. These policies aim to promote indigenous women’s rights including land rights, economic empowerment and knowledge preservation.

The panel included Ambassador Luis Alfonso de Alba, Representative of the Permanent Mission of Mexico to the United Nations, Mirna Cunningham, President of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII); Otilia Lux de Cotí, Director of the International Indigenous Women Forum, and Moni Pizani, Director, Latin America and Caribbean Regional Centre, UN Women.

Mirna Cunningham, Chair of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Peoples also spoke to UN Women about the main issues at stake for indigenous communities at Rio+20, the UN Conference on Sustainable Development in June.
