Dear friends,
Exciting things have been happening at the Foundation. We’ve hired a wonderful new executive director in Kabul, concluded new scholarship agreements, opened new opportunities for Afghan engineers and are about to build a dorm for Afghan girls. You also will read in this newsletter stories of competent young Afghans shining globally.
Opportunities for Afghans We’re excited that we just concluded agreements with several US schools – including Georgetown College and Lindsey Wilson College – to offer full four-year scholarships to Afghan students. Our first scholarship recipient at Tufts will begin his academic journey this fall. We’re currently in the midst of an aggressive effort to expand these partnerships to offer more scholarships to Afghan students. If you’d like to partner with us in extending these opportunities, please contact us.
Female dormitory at AUAF We are working on a partnership with AUAF to build a dormitory for female Afghan students who come to Kabul from other provinces. The dorm will be a safe space available to these girls free of charge, enabling them to embark on academic endeavors and pursue their dreams of a better education in the country’s capital.
Executive directors speak at international forums Our new executive director in Afghanistan, M. Akbar Ahmadzai, is currently in Haiti, where he serves as an expert for the Peace Divident Trust, training civil society leaders and entrepreneurs on project management, implementation, impact evaluation and monitoring. Akbar, who has helped dozens of Afghan businesses receive more than $500 million in seed funding, has made similar international trips in the past.
Our Washington, DC executive director, Ahmad Shuja, recently spoke at Pepperdine University about NGO best practices. The forum organized by Counter Conflict Partnership, a project of the League for Hope.
Exceptional Afghan Engineers Recently, we helped identify and test 11 extraordinary Afghan engineers – graduates of the Polytechnic University – for a biomedical equipment repair training program by the Texas-based nonprofit, MediSend International. In the words of MediSend executive director, the Afghan engineers scored “exceptionally well” in the test that is administered to engineers across the world. The Afghan engineers had one of the highest scores by anyone, ever. There are few metrics to gauge improvements in Afghan higher education, but young and competent Afghans trained in the country do shine globally when given the opportunity.
Support Our work with Afghan students empowers future leaders and competent professionals who help Afghanistan become self-reliant and proud; we provide these young men and women opportunities for growth. If you would like be part of the journey, please consider supporting us.
Sincerely, Said Jawad PS: If you know someone who wants to take the TOEFL or IELTS test in Afghanistan, this information may be helpful to them.
