Statement by the Prime Minister of Canada
on the attack on the Israeli Embassy in Cairo

Ottawa, OntarioPrime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement on the attack on the Israeli Embassy in Cairo:
“Our Government strongly condemns the attack on the Embassy of Israel in Egypt.
“We call upon the Government of Egypt to abide by its responsibility under the Vienna Convention and take all measures necessary to protect diplomatic personnel and property.
“Canada expects Egypt to honour its commitment to uphold its international agreements – including its peace treaty with Israel.
“As Egypt transforms itself into a representative democracy, it is critical for both countries to work hard on reducing tensions between their peoples so that regional stability may be attained.
“We hope for the safety and security of all those affected by this attack.”
