mina miniTHE SKY’S THE LIMIT – Our first female Tactical Flight Officer, Constable Mina Rahravan
When Constable Mina Rahravan goes to work, she has a different view of the world. And it’s not just because she spends most of her day hundreds of feet above the ground. Rahravan patrols York Region from an altitude of 500 to 1,000 feet as the first female Tactical Flight Officer for York Regional Police.

Rahravan adopted a broader perspective on life decades ago, while growing up amidst the chaos of war in Tehran, Iran. “I grew up lacking peace and freedom and I set out to create what was lacking,” Rahravan said. Joining York Regional Police officer in 2009, the recruit was affectionately known by her platoon mates as “Ray of Sunshine” for her unwavering positivity.

That outlook didn’t come easy.

Along her journey, Rahravan mastered English, Spanish and French in addition to Farsi, her native language. Her interest in a cultural, global dialogue has helped her excel with the police service. “When people have to interact with police, it’s not always a good day for them,” Rahravan explained. “In a diverse region like York, it’s important for police to try to have cultural understanding. But I know that if they have a conflict and I don’t understand it, I can’t take it personally.”

Rahravan’s culturally-sensitive approach to policing saw her appointed as one of four Canadian to participate in a three-week International Visitors’ Leadership Program, hosted by the U.S. Department of State, promoting interfaith dialogue and human rights. The tour hit a nerve with the constable, who has experienced a plethora of cultures in her lifetime. She has made it her goal to showcase the connections York Regional Police makes with diverse communities. “The trip was a wake-up call for me,” said Rahravan.

“I now see an opportunity to bring York Regional Police to the global stage. The sky’s the limit.”

elizabeth Book PhotoElizabeth Correia – Mother of three beautiful boys; Keeno, Captain and Kirk who joined her family in 2008, motivational speaker, writer and founder of ‘D.e.v.a In You Group’ which is a self development and Life Coaching Company for women and at-risk girls.

This woman finds peace and joy in uplifting women and encouraging youth from all walks of life to discover the D.e.v.a within (the divine, exalted, victorious, angelic). She has embraced her destiny in empowering women and girls and is committed to using her story in service of her community.

Elizabeth lives life on and with purpose-daily.

She is no stranger to obstacles and adversity; abused as a child, in and out of foster care, struggled to make it out in the world alone and pregnant in her teens. She knows exactly what it means to be a survivor. Elizabeth does not believe these things hold you down or back.

She quotes, “My trials and tribulations have help to shape me into the woman I am today. I’m far from perfect but I strive to be the best I can be without taking things serious enough to affect me negatively”

If You Played in My Playground’ is a temporal experience. It hearkens back to a youth gone by but makes certain the reader is aware that this is Elizabeth’s playground. And with this comes a life you have not experienced until now when you walk alongside throughout her tumultuous story.

In Elizabeth’s debut novel her unique new voice tells the story of a Portuguese woman navigating the ghetto of Toronto. She trudges through ill- gotten neighbourhoods with a knowledge that they are her own and carries a strong will through welfare, drug trafficking, lost lovers and all forms of physical and sexual abuse. She becomes as hardened as the ones who have wronged her; unable to clean the wounds she bore at such a tender age. She is unable to understand why the world has taken everything away from her including the one person who loved her: Her Vuvo (Grandmother). Slowly, she finds love incrementally through the birth and rearing of her son Keeno and is saved by God in the eyes of the Church. Elizabeth’s story imprints itself on you with its’ heartbreaking honesty and her remarkable ability to recall the details of her own coming of age. It is a story that needs to be told and a beacon for women everywhere.

This is Elizabeth’s first book length project. It is a memoir detailing her own life and reflects the extreme circumstances of violence and abuse she dealt with at a young age. This book is a cathartic and cleansing experience for her and one she needs to tell the world. It’s relevance spans Toronto and illuminates an underbelly Torontonians should be exposed to. It also is a part of her quest to create awareness for women everywhere about the effects of emotional, physical and sexual abuse.

Elizabeth’s story cannot be missed. It is a story you may think you have heard before but not in a voice as vibrant and strong as hers.

Six years ago Elizabeth founded Street Projects which provides aid, feeds the hungry, clothes the poor and ministers to those who have lost hope and have been disadvantaged by family and social circumstances. Her motivation to better the streets of Toronto is deeply rooted from her life as a street kid. Elizabeth has dedicated her life to positive girls/women’s development programming. She has chosen to use her story in service of her community and to serve the world.
