Cheryl Saban is a writer and social commentator who holds a Ph.D. in psychology. She is well known for her philanthropic endeavors and respected for her dedication to pediatric medical research, foster care education sponsorship, mind-body wellness for all ages, and ubiquitous, affordable health care. Dr. Saban has written numerous articles about women, children, marriage, parenting, and socio-political issues, and is a regular blogger for HuffingtonPost.com.

Her focus on chronic illness in children and families helped fuel her interest in women’s health and well-being issues, not only for women and families in her city of residence, but for women all over the globe who face challenges. Her first-hand experience working with chronically ill children and their parents — primarily mothers — was instrumental in her decision to write about a woman’s worth; she observed the dedication, multi-tasking, and endless devotion required of the moms, and the difficulties and road-blocks many of them faced.

forcible rapeDedication to the well-being of other women aside, the author’s personal experiences supply ample input for this book. Dr. Saban was raped when she was 18; married for the first time at 20, a mother at 21, again at 23, and divorced for the first time at 25.

She struggled with the concept of her own worth as a consequence of many of her experiences, and brings that emotion and knowledge to the forefront in her work. Her life has been cluttered with ups and downs, roadblocks and difficulties, and eventually with personal epiphanies and triumphs.

Chairman and CEO of Saban Capital Group Inc. Haim Saban and wife Cheryl attend the Allen & Co Media Conference in Sun Valley, IdahoAfter a second failed marriage, she eventually met and married Haim Saban, CEO of Saban Capital, with whom she had two more children, and has been happily married for 20 years. Dr. Saban’s personal experience as a wife, mother of four, and grandmother of four, creates a camaraderie with her readers.

She is at once a teacher, a counselor, and a student, for she knows from experience that there are few absolutes — that life is about change and adaptation. She does not shy away from disclosing her own foibles, tragedies and triumphs in order to send a message of hope and possibility to others.

Born and raised in San Diego, California, Dr. Saban attended San Diego State College before moving on to Marin.

Eventually relocating to Los Angeles, she gained wisdom in the “school of life” before going on to earn her Ph.D. in Psychology in 2005. A member of the American Psychological Association, Dr. Saban is also on the board of Trustees of Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, The Los Angeles Free Clinic, and The Marc & Jane Nathanson Mental Health Resource Center at UCLA. Other affiliations include, The Everychild Foundation, The Los Angeles Rape Center, Plan International, Women for Women International, Women’s Funding Network, PeaceKeeper Cosmetics, and the Saban Center for Middle East Studies at the Brookings Institution.

One of her charitable endeavors is the non-profit organization, 50 Ways to Save our Children, and the Web site, 50ways.org. Set up as a component and compliment to her book of the same name, 50ways.org is a database rich with information about organizations that benefit children, and their families.

In 2009, Dr. Saban founded the non-profit organization Women’s Self Worth Foundation with a $10 million pledge to charitable organizations for the aiding, advancement and empowerment of girls and women. Since its inception, the Foundation has been very active in working to advance its goals.

Earlier this year, the Foundation made a $1 million grant to the Cherie Blair Foundation for Women, and a $500,000 grant to help establish the Barbra Streisand Women’s Heart Center at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. This follows a grant to Girls Incorporated in 2011 to mentor underserved girls and young women in the United States and Canada to inspire them to lead financially sound, and productive lives, and two major commitments to The American Indian College Fund and Operation Homefront, for scholarship programs benefiting American Indian women and military spouses in 2010.

In 2009, the Foundation made its first $1 million grant to The Women’s Funding Network to benefit ACCION’s U.S.A’s micro-lending programs.

We are proud of the ongoing impact made by our partnership with the Women’s Funding Network and Accion USA.

Our work with these organizations empowers low- to moderate- income women entrepreneurs by providing them with access to capital and financial education to start and expand small businesses. From jewelry, to daycare to graphic design these loans have helped women in many industries without access to traditional financing improve their careers and their communities. This week we are proud to share one of these success stories.

girl_with_hatMonica Gonzalez, Proud Owner of Tanto Dulce Café Harlem, NY When ACCION USA borrower Monica Gonzalez designed the interior of her new Harlem café, she did so from a hospital bed. Monica was recovering from major emergency surgery in the months before the opening of Tanto Dulce Café, her small business a dream in the making.

Originally a lawyer from Venezuela, Monica moved her family to New York to make a better life for her children. She spoke very little English and, faced with limited employment opportunity, turned to self?employment to support her family.

Language was not her only barrier; due to Monica’s limited credit history, traditional banks turned her away when she needed capital to get her business off the ground. Credit cards, and the high prices that come with them, were not an option either, as they would only perpetuate Monica’s debt.

ACCION USA recognized her entrepreneurial spirit and strong business sense – and with a $2,000 loan, helped Monica move her start?up business from a basement location to a proper storefront. Complemented with financial literacy training, the loan allowed her to improve her credit and qualify for larger loan amounts.
Monica’s unassuming demeanor hides a fierce entrepreneurial drive that is evidenced by her perseverance. Her story is a testament to the real impact a small, affordable loan can have on a minority?owned business and the family.

Dr. Saban is President of the Saban Family Foundation, which was established alongside her husband Haim in 1999, to support medical, children’s and education programs. The Saban’s have been major contributors to the Saban Free Clinic in Los Angeles, the Motion Picture and Television Fund, Soroka Children’s Hospital in Israel, the John Wayne Cancer Institute, American Israel Education Foundation, William Jefferson Clinton Foundation, and to rehabilitation facilities for Friends of the Israel Defense Forces.

Dr. Saban serves on the Boards of The Saban Research Institute, Girls Inc., Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, and Marc & Jane Nathanson Mental Health Resource Center at UCLA. Dr. Saban served as a Commissioner for the City of Los Angeles Commission for Children, Youth, and Their Families, the Board of Directors of the Los Angeles Universal Preschool, and the Board of Overseers at the Keck School of Medicine at USC.

Dr. Saban holds a PhD in Psychology from California Coast University and is a member of the American Psychological Association.

“We are capable, valid, creative, intelligent, unique, and powerful! However, many of us lack the resources, and/or the belief in ourselves to fully reach our potential, or to feel as worthy and ‘worth it’ as we are.”
