Mother’s Index

THE BEST & WORST PLACES TO BE A MOTHER

Major Causes of Newborn Deaths

4 Lifesaving Solutions

Today we know that the 1st day of life offers unequaled opportunity to save lives and set the stage for a healthy future. A new analysis shows that wider use of four extremely low-cost products around birth could annually prevent 1 million deaths in the first month of life.

  • Speeding Up Growth

    Corticosteroids

When babies are born too soon, their lungs may not be fully developed and many don’t survive. But for 51¢, a pregnant woman can get a simple steroid injection to help her baby’s
    lungs mature.

  • Clean Cord Care

    Chlorhexidine

It’s hard to believe, but belly button infections can be fatal for vulnerable newborns. For just 10¢ per use, the antiseptic chlorhexidine can save lives when used to clean umbilical cords and belly buttons.

  •

    Fighting Infection

    Antibiotics

One of the common risks of birth is a deadly blood infection called sepsis. Injectable antibiotics can easily treat sepsis an other severe infections (e.g. pneumonia) for as little as 13¢.

  • Breathing Life

    Resuscitation Equipment

Some babies need help taking their first breath. A basic, resuscitation device costs just $6 and has helped millions of babies let out a cry to declare their birth.

Don't Let Her First Day Be Her Last Day

Esther

Newborns like Esther are why we’re dedicated to helping children in need. We work in the world’s poorest and most vulnerable places in countries, from America to Zimbabwe – saving one child at a time. Our caring staff helps provide lifesaving care for newborns, feed hungry children, educate girls and boys, fight child trafficking and respond to catastrophic disasters worldwide.

Sadly, we know firsthand that there are far too many children who aren’t getting the help they need. And that’s where YOU come in. Without compassionate people like you, children like Esther go without.

First Day Responders on the Frontlines

More than 1 million babies die on their first day of life. It’s a horrifying statistic, but we can do something about. With your support, we can help make sure newborns get access to lifesaving care from frontline health workers and the vital supplies they need to help babies survive and thrive.

Please join us in asking President Obama and Congress to protect global health funding and increase support for maternal, newborn and child-health programs.
