WOMEN Struggle – 15 years after Beijing Women’s Conference

Young Women’s struggle for Work and Education 15 years after Beijing Women’s Conference

07/2010

Education remains a key to improved livelihoods, health, civil and political rights, and gender equality, for people around the world. At the 1995 Beijing World Conference on Women the international community agreed to ensure, among many objectives, that girls and women have equal and adequate access to education. Since then, some progress has been made, but still too many girls struggle to achieve adequate education. In fact, girls make up more than half the number of adolescents who are out of school worldwide.

UN Radio, in partnership with the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) and UNIFEM, tells the stories of 15-year old girls around the world in a special series called Beijing+15: The Next Generation. These are girls born at the time the Beijing World Conference on Women reached landmark agreements on gender quality and women’s empowerment. Today, they represent an enormous potential resource for their countries and the world.

In this programme we hear about girls’hopes and dreams when it comes to education and employment.
