Why You Should Be Spending Time Outdoors

Do you spend more time at your desk or in front of a screen than you do outdoors? The majority of people do, even though spending time outside has so many benefits. It can be tricky to put time aside to do this, but even just a few minutes of fresh air can make a small difference, and you may be able to build your outdoor time up gradually. Here are just a couple of the reasons why you should be spending time outdoors.

Exercise

There are many forms of exercise that you can do outside, such as cycling, running, yoga, or even gardening. Anything that gets your body moving and increases your heart rate can have an impact on your health.

Cycling is a great option as it is a full-body workout that uses many muscles throughout your body whilst still being low-impact. However, there isn’t a one size fits all option when it comes to choosing a bike. You should always make sure your bike is the correct size, as a bike that is too small or too large can be uncomfortable and cause problems.

Getting help from a professional is a very good idea, as they will have plenty of experience and will be able to recommend the best bike for you. There are a few measurements you will need to take into consideration, such as your height and the measurement of your inside leg, as well as the frame size of your chosen bike. Gender can also have an impact on the style and size of the bike you choose, with bike brands such as Liv bikes specializing in bikes for women, so it may be worth checking your local Liv bike stockist to look into these differences.

Relaxation

Spending time outside and in nature can help you relax, feel happier, and less stressed. No one is completely sure why being outside can make you feel happier, but the Japanese practice of ‘forest bathing’ can help boost your mood by connecting with nature and mindfully walking in natural environments. Even just sitting in your garden with a cup of tea and a book can be a great way to wind down and destress after a long day.

Get More Vitamin D

It is very important to properly care for your skin and body when outside, which includes wearing SPF every day even if the ‘sun isn’t out.’ Vitamin D is an essential vitamin for the human body. It can help strengthen bones as it promotes the absorption of calcium from our food into our bones. It can also help to regulate your immune system.

Boost Your Immune System

Being outdoors can help boost your immune system in a multitude of ways, from increased vitamin D production to the fresh air boosting your white blood cells. Fresh air also helps to cleanse your lungs, provide your immune system with oxygen, boost your energy levels and help your digestive system, among other benefits.

This isn’t scientific advice, and you should always protect yourself when spending time outdoors. There are so many benefits to being outside, whether that is hiking or gardening, and it is worth making time in your busy schedule to just take a few deep breaths in the garden!
