Scarlett Lewis – Nurturing, Healing, Love The morning of December 14, 2012 began like any other for Scarlett Lewis as her six-year-old son, Jesse, set out for school, stopping in the driveway to write a message with his finger in the frost of her car door: “I love you.” Unbeknownst to her, just hours later, he would be gone—a victim of the gunman who opened fire at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. And Scarlett’s life would be forever changed.

Yet, Nurturing, Healing, Love is not a story about a massacre. It is a story about how to face and survive the impossible. It is a story about how to find courage when you think you have none. And it is a story about how to choose love instead of anger, fear, or hatred.

After that unimaginable day, Scarlett’s life began anew—along with her determination to fulfill the sentiment of three words Jesse wrote on a chalkboard at home shortly before he died: Norurting Helin Love (Nurturing Healing Love).

Empowered by her son’s simple message, Scarlett shares the intimate steps of her personal journey back to living along with her poignant discovery of how love would carry her and her family through the heartbreak if they let it.

In her son’s honor, Scarlett began the Jesse Lewis Choose Love Foundation, an establishment committed to teaching children how to live a life centered around compassion and love. Honoring the belief that when we make choices from a place of love, Scarlett shows us within the pages of Nurturing, Healing, Love how the world truly can become a safer, happier, and healthier place.

And so, through the story of a tragedy that began with an angry thought, Nurturing, Healing, Love reflects Jesse’s vitally important message to “choose love.” Led by hope, love, forgiveness, and faith, Scarlett poignantly inspires and gracefully teaches us how to become instruments of compassion and peace, revealing Jesse’s ultimate truth that love never ends.

The Foundation

Just days prior to the tragedy, Jesse wrote three words on his chalkboard at home: “Nurturing. Healing. Love.” We understand these final words as a calling from Jesse that says, ‘I have something for you to do for us. That’s to consciously change an angry thought into a loving one’ because it is a choice.”

The Jesse Lewis Choose Love Foundation collaborates with professional educators to bring lasting meaning to Jesse’s murder by developing school-based educational programs to change our current culture of violence to one of safety, peace and love for everyone in our world.

This is the single guiding principle, the sole purpose and motto of our work: Teaching Others to Choose Love.
