The First Rule of Ten
Enlightened Cop Turns Gumshoe
by Gay Hendricks, Tinker Lindsay

Meet Tenzing Norbu (“Ten” for short), an ex-Buddhist monk who dreamed of becoming a modern-day Sherlock Holmes.

Last Friday night, I tasted one of life’s sweet little experiences.

Saturday, I got shot.

It makes me wonder if I have a low tolerance for things going well in my world. Or maybe I just need to be more mindful of what’s going on, both outside and in.

This may come as a surprise to you, but I’ve decided to put some rules back into my life—just not the scriptural kind I was so good at rebelling against back when I lived in the monastery. These are life-rules rules, drawn from my own experience, regardless of whether it’s humbling, exhilarating or painful. Rule Number One is this: If you’re open to learning, you get your life-lessons delivered as gently as the tickle of a feather. But if you’re defensive, if you stubbornly persist in being right instead of learning the lesson at hand, if you stop paying attention to the tickles, the nudges, the clues—boom! Sledgehammer. Or in this case, the mangled slug of a .45 automatic.

The truth is, the pain caused by the bullet-graze, was insignificant compared to the deep ache of uncertainty provoked by my brush with death. I felt lost, swarmed by questions to which I had no easy answers. But once I could see a way forward, I actually started feeling grateful to Leon—the poor misguided being who pulled the trigger.

From the time I was a teenager, reading all those contraband detective novels by candlelight in our sleeping quarters, I never wanted to be anything but a modern incarnation of Sherlock Holmes. So when I made Detective five years ago, I thought I had my life all wrapped up, with a nice, pretty bow on top. But lately, the realities of working for the LAPD have been closing in on me. I can hardly breathe anymore.

Some cops are happy to spend the bulk of their time shuffling papers and testifying in court. They’d rather pass their days getting hammered by defense attorneys than roam around out in the big world, messing with actual criminals. Not me. I like the action. I spent enough years sitting cross-legged in confined spaces, eyes closed, sheltered from anything that might challenge reality. Or nonreality, for that matter.

It’s just that every minute in court, or chained to my desk, is a minute I’m not out putting bad people away, which last I heard was the whole point. The number of hours I spend on real police work has been declining steadily over the past couple of years, until these days I’m lucky if I pull 15 hours a week outside.

My partner’s been putting up with a swelling stream of complaints about the paperwork, the politics, the endless bureaucratic hassles and mandatory regulations that are taking all the joy out of the job. I mean, monks deal with endless rules, too, but at least where you are, the goal is freedom from suffering. Not piling on more and more of it.

Once again in my life, something had to give. Once again, something has.

It’s over. I’m no longer a cop.

How to Master the Dating Game
by David Wygant

How to find the perfect partner by revealing your true self…

I spent my 20s and much of my 30s chasing money and women. I was very good at both. There was just one problem with this: I wasn’t satisfied in my relationships. Every woman I decided to date was a carbon copy of the last one—and the last one wasn’t very good. Why? Because I didn’t learn the lesson the very first time and had to reconnect with the exact same person in a different body over and over again until I finally figured it out.

I used to look at meeting women as a game. To me it was a blast to be able to chase them, convince them that I was fantastic, and get a phone number. I always thought that the phone number was the conquest—the payoff. I really didn’t understand the importance of self-love and creating the most powerful version of me.

Dating is really all about growing. Every person you meet is someone you get to know for a certain amount of time. During that period, you have a unique opportunity to learn more about yourself and what you want—in life and in a partner. Even if you’ve gone on 50 first dates and never been on a second one with the same person, you should just look at this as growth, where you can learn something about who you are while being in the company of another individual.

Have you ever had a relationship based on need? (Hasn’t everybody had at least one or two?) For example, you’re sick of being single, so you find the best possible person at that time to be with, even though you know he or she isn’t right for you. At one point in my life I seriously considered marriage just because all my friends were getting married.

Sure enough, a good friend of mine decided that she’d fallen in love with me. So what did I do? I made it work. We broke up after three months, and things should have stayed that way. But I continued to pursue her, and we got back together and had a three-year relationship. She was a wonderful person, but we were honestly never aligned sexually or emotionally. We weren’t even that great as lovers. We were just good friends, and it took three years for me to realize that.

During this process, though, I grew a lot. I realized that I have a high desire for passion and intimacy, and I need to be with somebody who has this same longing. And I accepted the relationship for what it was: a great, fantastic experience where I learned a lot about myself, as well as being close with another person. Dating is for growing, but getting to know yourself is the key.

Self-Help
The Power of Self-Healing
Good Health Is in Your Hands
by Dr. Fabrizio Mancini

Unlock your natural healing potential…

I love to tell the story about the medical student who was taking a course on diseases. One morning after class, he said to his professor, “With all these diseases, I don’t understand how anyone can survive.” The teacher replied, “When you study how the body works, you’ll wonder how anyone can get sick.”

Our bodies were designed with the ability to make repairs and to even defend against illness or injury. We are, in truth, self-healing creatures. You’ve seen the proof many times yourself. If you nick yourself while shaving or scrape your knee, you can see the healing start almost immediately. Inside your body, specialized blood cells, called platelets, seal up the wound through clotting to stem the flow of blood. White blood cells are dispatched to the area to fight bacteria that might enter the body through the broken skin. And red blood cells arrive on the scene to nourish the healing tissue with oxygen. Over the next few days, the tiny wound scars over and finally disappears—thanks to the body’s own natural team of “cellular paramedics.”

And if you’ve ever broken a bone, you’ve experienced self-healing in action, too. After being in a cast for a few weeks, what happens to that bone? It heals itself with new, natural bone in quite an amazing process of repair. That’s why when your doctor removes your cast and says, “You’re as good as new!” he or she isn’t kidding!

Likewise, a sprained ankle, pulled muscle, or a painful back will usually heal with rest. And while over-the-counter medicines will relieve the symptoms of a cold, it is your own healthy immune system that brings you back to health.

And just as miraculously, your body fights against cancer. Several times a day, a normal cell in the body might mutate into a cancerous one, but your body recognizes this and its natural defense mechanisms actually knock out that cancer cell. There is healing going on every single moment of our lives.

It’s up to us—as individuals—to be the keepers and protectors of our own health. Statistics prove my point: the health-care system affects only about 10 percent of our health outcome; the remaining 90 percent is determined by lifestyle choices, and how and where we live. Health-care providers have little control over those things, but we certainly do! And I am on a mission to help people everywhere realize that health and healing is within their own grasp.

A Message Worth Repeating

On Christmas Day, empowering speaker and Hay House best-selling author Marianne Williamson moved thousands with this simple message on her Facebook page. We believe it’s worth repeating: Christmas is not just the birth of one man two thousand years ago; it’s the birth of divine love in all of us. It didn’t just happen in Bethlehem; it happens in our hearts, when we allow it to. The word Jesus is a pathway of Light, paving a way out of the mortal darkness of fear. Today there is a burst of holiness due to all people who, if even for a moment, embrace the possibility of divine love on earth. Now. Today. May it be so.

Message from the Editor
Happy 25th Anniversary, Hay House!
A company built on heart thoughts.

“Life always brings you what you need.” — Louise Hay

This year, Hay House celebrates its 25th Anniversary. It all began from the kind and loving heart of our beautiful and amazing founder Louise Hay. Back then, Louise was a counselor—or what we’d call a life coach today. She was always there whenever someone was in need and she took the time to sit and listen whenever someone had a problem or a challenge.

When she saw how often people let illness and hurtful circumstances control their lives, Louise vowed to help them see that the root of their pain stemmed from their own negative thoughts. So, she sat down and created a 12-page pamphlet with a blue cover where she described how our mental patterns and beliefs can actually contribute to illness in our body. In this little booklet, Louise listed various medical conditions, explained what thoughts correlated with them, and showed us that the way to heal our lives was just a positive thought away.

As Louise sees it, “Life has always brought me what I needed. I’ve just responded to what showed up.” And what showed up were hundreds of orders for her little blue book. Every night in the bedroom of her small house, she answered each letter by hand. She sat for hours—stuffing and hand-addressing envelopes. “My then-90-year-old mother was very good at licking stamps!”

Soon the business of mailing these books outgrew her house, and so began her publishing company—Hay House. Louise couldn’t know at the time how much impact this small blue book or her wisdom in the books to come would have on the world and its way of thinking.

To honor Hay House’s 25th Anniversary, I originally set out to create a list of the 25 Most Memorable Hay House Moments for this column. Being one of the old timers here, (a 10-year veteran and proud of it), I started to write down all the highlights I could remember—when we built the very first Hay House website ( we now manage more than 20; when we first opened our offices in London and Johannesburg (we now have 8 offices); when our CEO Reid Tracy first declared, “We’re going to start our own online Hay House radio station”; when we all squeezed together around a TV set in the back of the office to watch Louise’s return to the Oprah show almost to the day of her first appearance 20 years earlier; when our warehouse staff stopped producing and packaging our author cassette tapes so we could move to the new CD format; when Jerry and Esther Hicks parked their enormous tour bus in our parking lot when they came for a visit; when we rolled out the red carpet for the Hollywood premiere of our first Hay House feature film; when Wayne Dyer gave a heartwarming keynote to a sell-out audience at our first I Can Do It Conference—and he still had hair!

But these are just my memories. I’d much rather create a list of special moments from YOU—our awesome Hay House family of customers! So, in celebration of our 25th Anniversary and the beautiful design of this issue of Present Moments, I’d like to do something a little difference this month. I’d like to invite you to share your special moments and experiences with Hay House. Tell us (in a brief email, photo or video): Why Hay House Means So Much to Me!

If you’re among the first 25 people we hear from, we’ll send you a complimentary copy of one of the new releases mentioned in this issue. We’ll also feature some of your letters and videos in next month’s issue. Email me at [email protected].

Remember, the most memorable moment for all of us at Hay House is the daily connection we have with YOU—on our Facebook pages, on our websites, in our customer care chats, over the telephone, in emails, and at our events. Thank you for your love and support and for being the HEART of Hay House.

Here’s to another exceptional year!
