Come Enjoy Summer Concerts at Rideau Hall

OTTAWA—Everyone is invited to hear the sounds of summer at Rideau Hall, during the 2011 Governor General’s Summer Concert Series, being held in partnership with the Music and Beyond Festival 2011 and Ottawa Chamberfest 2011. Visitors are encouraged to come early, bring a picnic and enjoy these free outdoor concerts on the beautiful grounds of Rideau Hall, the governor general’s official residence.


Sunday, July 17, 2011

On Sunday, July 17, at noon, be whisked away to a tropical haven with the Nepean Panharmonic Steel Band. The group was formed by a group of Trinidadians who share a passion for playing and adapting these unique instruments to play music of various cultures. The band’s repertoire includes songs from the Caribbean, Latin America and Europe.

Following this concert, the Pipes and Drums of the Band of the Ceremonial Guard, one of Canada’s oldest and best-known military bands, will perform at 2 p.m. The skirl of the pipes and the beat of the drums will be sure to amaze.


Saturday, July 23, 2011

On Saturday, July 23, at 1 p.m., FiddleDance! will take the stage. Stepdancer and fiddler Stephanie Cadman joins violinist Lara St. John for an hour of jaw-dropping Celtic pyrotechnics.

Mediterranean Crossroads will then take the stage at 3 p.m. Juno-nominated singers Maryem Tollar and Aviva Chernick delight with an afternoon repertoire of World music.

The Band of the Ceremonial Guard, one of Canada’s oldest and best-known military bands, will then perform at 4:30 p.m. The band’s rich repertoire is sure to enchant audiences young and old alike.

Sunday July 24

On Sunday, July 24, at 1 p.m., Borealis String Quartet will take the stage. Acclaimed for its fiery performances, the ensemble delivers Haydn, Mendelssohn and more with passionate style and refined interpretation.

At 3 p.m., Viva México will delight the crowd with a taste of Mexico’s musical legacy. Using flawless technique and audience-pleasing showmanship, Mariachi musicians blend virtuosity and art, magically transforming music into life.

The Governor General’s Summer Concert Series is a popular activity for the whole family to enjoy. All concerts are free of charge.

Parking: Available on nearby neighbourhood streets. Seniors and visitors with impaired mobility will have access to parking on the Rideau Hall grounds via the Princess Avenue entrance.

Public transportation: The site is accessible by bus (Route 9). For more information on OC Transpo services and maps, please visit www.octranspo.com or call 613-741-4390.

Bicycle racks: Available at Thomas Gate, one of the public entrances to the grounds.

Facilities: Wheelchairs, washroom facilities, water fountains, play structure and picnic tables are available on-site.

Weather: Concerts will be cancelled only under severe weather conditions, in which case announcements will be made via our website at www.gg.ca.

No pets or alcohol are permitted on the grounds.

 

The concerts are open to media. They must enter the grounds through the Princess Avenue Gate and will be asked to park in the designated area.
