IWHC: New York Rally for Women’s Health at Foley Square – February 26, 2011

International Women's Health Coalition: ACTION ALERT
Earlier this week, we expressed deep concern about the latest GOP Assault on women’s health and urged you to take action against unprecedented funding cuts and policy restrictions on some of the most important women’s health programs and services both here in the United States and abroad.

The GOP majority in Congress has launched an assault on women’s health and rights.Their latest budget proposal would make unprecedented funding cuts to some of the most important women’s health programs and services. IWHC is deeply concerned about the potential negative effects on women’s health programming both here in the U.S. and abroad.Included among the programs on the chopping block are Title X (responsible for family planning funding in the United States), International Family Planning ($200 million cut), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) (funding completely eliminated), Global HIV/AIDS  programs ($513.3 million cut, including a $150 million cut to the Global Fund), teen pregnancy prevention programs (funding completely eliminated), as well as maternal and child health block grants. As if these budget cuts aren’t enough, the proposed budget also proposes reinstating the dangerous Global Gag Rule, a move which would deny women access to safe abortion services around the world. The House will have key votes THIS WEEK on key women’s health and rights issues, beginning tomorrow. Members of Congress need to hear that you oppose this unprecedented assault on women’s health and rights.

Take Action TODAY Against GOP Assault on Women’s Health

Call the Capitol Switchboard TODAY at (202) 224-3121 and ask to be connected with your Representative.

Let her or him know they should:

•    Oppose the Latta amendment to eliminate international family planning assistance.
•    Oppose the Pence amendment to defund Planned Parenthood.
•    Support the Lowey amendment to restore funding for Title X for family planning in the United States.
•    Oppose the FY11 Continuing Resolution (H.R. 1) because it contains too many overwhelmingly damaging budget cuts for women and for the country.

If passed, these cuts will negatively impact the health of women and girls here and around the world. But we won’t go down without a fight. Call your representative TODAY and express your support for investing in a just and healthy life for all.

This Saturday, rallies in support of women’s health are taking place across the United States. For our friends in New York, we invite you to join IWHC staff and colleagues tomorrow for the New York Rally for Women’s Health at Foley Square. We will meet at 12:30 on the corner of Chambers and Center Streets on the City Hall side and walk to the rally together.

We hope to see you there!
