THIS WEEKI am so pleased to share the news that after a year of speeches and outreach, the First Lady’s signature issue of providing children with healthy food in schools was advanced yesterday with passage of the “The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act” – a groundbreaking piece of bipartisan legislation that will significantly improve the quality of meals that children receive at school and will play an integral role in our efforts to combat childhood obesity. Read the First Lady’s statement here. The First Lady often says that spending time with young people is her favorite part of being First Lady.  Over the past couple of weeks, she met with lots of energetic young students. We visited Maple Elementary in Newark, N.J. with Newark Mayor Cory Booker to learn from students what they are doing to promote physical activity and healthy eating. On the same day, we drove to Harlem to visit the Police Athletic League to learn more about their creative partnership with a neighborhood school that needed more physical education classes. Then, the First Lady visited Riverside Elementary in Miami, Florida to announce Let’s Move Salad Bars to Schools, an initiative by the Fruit and Vegetable Alliance, the Food, Family and Farming Foundation and the United Fresh Produce Association to bring 6,000 salad bars to schools in three years. As we say every week, everyone has a role to play in ending childhood obesity, whether you are an elected official, a community organization, a school or an individual. We need your help in making sure children born today reach adulthood at a healthy weight. So, what are you waiting for? Take action today.Until next week,Robin
